Forgot your Password? What to do

Postby Fiona Hulse on Wed 30 Apr, 2008 6:31 pm

These are the steps you should take before contacting me when you realise you've forgotten your password and can't log in.

1) Passwords are cAse-sensitiVe - so make sure you are using the Shift Key where necessary. :badcomp:

2) Look for your original registration email. It'll be dated on or after 22nd March 2008 (which is when this new board was started). That email will show the password you selected when registering.

N.B. If you haven't logged in on this board before - check your registration email to make sure that you have registered in the required Firstname Surname format, as if you have registered as a single name or nickname your registration will have been deleted. :(

3) If none of that helps, use the 'I forgot my password' link at the Login screen. When you get the email with the new password, you must first click on the link provided in the email to activate the password before trying to use it! Then use the password to login, and change it to one of your preference in your User Control Panel.

N.b. read the follow-up post below before you try logging in again when you do step 3. :flowers:

4) And then - if all else has failed - go to the Contact Us page on the main Agility Addicts site and email me using the form mail.

Thanks! :flowers:

Some more notes on using the 'I forgot my password' link:

1) a reminder that when you receive the email with the new password, you must click on the activation link in the email before trying to use it! (p.s. the password email is generated automatically by the forum software and does not come from me personally).

2) in most cases all you need to do now is login with the new password. You can change it back to something you'd prefer in User Control Panel - Profile - Edit Account Settings. However:

3) if you've tried to login unsuccessfully several times before doing the 'I forgot my password' bit, when you try to login with the new password the screen will reload and the forum software will require you to type in a captcha code (the letters and numbers against a patterned background) to prove you're not a computer program trying to hack into your account ... typing in the captcha code won't be a problem for most of you as you did the same when you first registered for the forum. But:

4) Please note that when the screen reloaded to load the captcha code, one of two things will have happened. Either:

a) the browser has completely forgotten the username and password you typed in above, in which case you need to type them in again before submitting that page with the captcha code. Or:

b) harder to spot, the browser remembers your username and seems to remember your password - but the password it's remembering is the old one not the new one! You won't know because all you can see in the password box are dots. But please, after typing in the captcha code, retype your new password into the password box before submitting! Otherwise you'll get an error screen.

5) if you still have problems, obviously drop me a line, being as precise as possible about the error you're getting.
